Slipknot ‘The Devil In I’ – The Song of the Week for 9/22/2014

Released August 25, 2014 via Roadrunner Records, “The Devil In I” is the 2nd single off of .5:  The Gray Chapter, the 5th studio album by Slipknot

If you tuned in last week, you saw the rarity of a metal song being chosen as Song of the Week but here we are again with another one. I have quite a few alternative songs I want to feature here on the site as Song of the Week but the respective bands haven’t released videos for the songs yet. So I dove back in to my ‘Best New Music of 2014’ Spotify playlist that I continually update to figure out what other song I could feature. Oh yeah! These first two Slipknot songs to be released off their upcoming album are actually really good. So good in fact, I can honestly say that I haven’t been this impressed with the band since their fantastic debut album, 1999’s Slipknot. And while I personally think 1st single “The Negative One” (embedded below) is the better song, “The Devil In I” has an incredible video. This thing is a glorified 6-minute horror movie and a great way to reintroduce the band, their new masks, their new material after a 6 year album drought. What took so long? Well, the band has taken 3 years, 4 years, and 6 years between their last 3 albums, respectively, so it is nothing new. But these last few years have been a trying time for band, notably due to the death of one of the founding members, Paul Gray. Lead singer Corey Taylor also has a very successful side project with the band Stone Sour, a more straight-forward hard rock/alternative metal band, compared to Slipknot.

“Under the words of men
Something is tempting the father
Where is your will, my friend?
Insatiates never even bother
You and I, wrong or right
Traded a lie for the leverage
In between the lens in light
You’re not what you seem”
