Alt-J ‘Left Hand Free’ – The Song of the Week for 12/1/2014

Released July 15, 2014 via Infectious Records, “Left Hand Free” is the 3rd single off of This Is All Yours, the 2nd studio album by Alt-J

When “Left Hand Free” first came out I was a little surprised. It didn’t sound like anything Alt-J had done on the first album and it was way different than “Hunger of the Pine”, the 1st single that had come out from the new album. Did I think it was going to blow up like it has? No way!

“Left Hand Free” has arguably become Alt-J’s most recognized song, as it has become their most mainstream song when you look at it’s chart performance compared to “Breezeblocks”, last year’s break out hit that put Alt-J on the map.

Alt-J have released two versions of the video for the song, the newest can be seen above and the original can be seen below, as well as a recent live performance of the song on David Letterman.

Not sure what is next for the band. Is there a 4th single on the way? 3rd single “Every Other Freckle” hasn’t really caught on, although it is definitely a standout track off the new album. One thing is for sure, try to catch them in concert because they are awesome live. I caught them in San Diego on tour for An Awesome Wave and saw them last month on tour for the new album. Lucky me, I get to see them next month at 91X’s Wrex the Halls 2014.

What do you think the next single off of This Is All Yours is going to be? How does the album compare An Awesome Wave? Sound off in the comments section below and tweet me @MusicTrajectory

This is Alt-J’s 4th Song of the Week nod, see more here.

“Hey, shady baby, I’m hot like the prodigal son
Pick a petal eenie meenie miney moe
And, flower, you’re the chosen one

Well, your left hand’s free
And your right’s in a grip
With another left hand
Watch his right hand slip
Towards his gun, oh, no”
